Put a Bow on it.

Happy Friday folks. Thanks for coming back to my fashion Nazi soap box.

As a brand spanking new blog, I am not entirely sure who you are yet but if you have landed here then I am pretty sure that you know how to use a computer. That does not necessarily make you a geek but I'd say that if you're reading a blog called MuchMacho, you ain't necessarily a jock.

Which leads me to the focus of this post. The humble bow tie.

For most people, this is a mens accessory that is usally kept for weddings and casino themed poker nights with your buddies and I reckon that it is a pretty safe bet that at least one of your bow ties areof the adjustable strap variety. You know, the ones that are made from left over bra parts.

This little piece of tied cloth has enormous power but like most sources of enormous power, it can be used to power your sex appeal or if left in the wrong hands, could be a weapon of mass destruction. To illustrate my point, if you own a bow tie, think about where to keep it. Do you keep it with your tux and cummerbund or with your short sleeved button down shirts and pocket protector?

That of course is a trick question because if your tie is with your tux then you are underutilizing this most awesome of mens accessories and everyone knows nobody need pocket protectors now with the advent of tactile touch screens. The point I am trying to make is the bow tie does not need to saved for formal occasions or left to the nerd herd.

What to Wear

First of all, throw away the pin-on, strap-on, velcro-on, blu-tak-on tie. You're not fooling anyone. Wearing a fake bow tie is the male equivalent of putting tissues in your bra to increase your cup size. It may look good at first glance but on closer inspection (and we are all looking for that closer inspection) it will only lead to disappointment.

Secondly, if you are planning to wear a bow tie, you should also plan to wear a jacket. Or at least have one close by so that it looks like you wore one but took it off. And under no circumstances should a bow tie be accompanied by short sleeves. The only conceivable time when a bow tie should accompany an absense of sleeves is if you are a male strip-a-gram.

When to wear it?

Like any other tie, there is an element of formality to wearing a bow tie. It is not something you'd wear to the footy or someone's BBQ but it might be something you could include on a date or a night out. It doesn't have to be the ballet or an opera. What it does do though is allows for character development in the way you dress and differentiation.

The bow tie allows you to characterise yourself as in a preppy manner or a an intellectual the same way a normal power tie might charcterise you as an executive or a skinny tie might characterise you as beatnick.

Regardless of how you wear the bow tie though the thing to remember that the objective is balance and that if you are wearing a real bow tie (you know the one you actually tie) undressing in the company of others is a far more theatrical affair.

What is MuchMacho? It is one man's fight against metrosexuality. You might say that I am a metrophobe. Don't get me wrong, this blog has nothing to do with sexual orientation and everything about revelling in your manhood. In my humble opion, men should exude manliness and the last thing you should do if you want to exude manliness is to dress in your sister's hand-me-downs from last season.

This is a skinny pants, manbag, cosmetic, lip balm, free zone. What this blog will not be free of are ernest and hopefully sophisicated suggestions on how you can dress and generally "be" to give that appearance that when God was giving out testosterone, you went back for seconds and made a "shaken, not stirred" martini.
